ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਇੱਕ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਸੰਕਟ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਨ ਕਰ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਅੰਕੜਿਆਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਹਰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਲਗਭਗ 68 ਲੋਕ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਦਮ ਤੋੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਟਨਾਸ਼ਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਅੰਨ੍ਹੇਵਾਹ ਵਰਤੋਂ, ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਬਦਲਦੀ ਜੀਵਨ ਸ਼ੈਲੀ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਦੇ ਵਧਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਨ ਮੰਨੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਪੰਜਾਬ, ਜਿਸ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਦੇਸ਼ ਦਾ 'ਅੰਨ ਭੰਡਾਰ' ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ, ਅੱਜ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਵਰਗੀ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਲਪੇਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੈ। ਇੱਕ ਤਾਜ਼ਾ ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆਏ ਅੰਕੜੇ ਬੇਹੱਦ ਡਰਾਉਣੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਸੂਬੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੋਜ਼ਾਨਾ ਔਸਤਨ 68 ਲੋਕ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਕਾਰਨ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਾਨ ਗੁਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਮਾਲਵਾ ਖੇਤਰ ਇਸ ਬਿਮਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਗੜ੍ਹ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿੱਥੇ ਘਰ-ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੈਂਸਰ ਦੇ ਮਰੀਜ਼ ਮਿਲ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਸਿਹਤ ਮਾਹਿਰਾਂ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ, ਇਸ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਕਈ ਵੱਡੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਨ। ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਨ ਖੇਤੀਬਾੜੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀਟਨਾਸ਼ਕਾਂ (pesticides) ਅਤੇ ਰਸਾਇਣਕ ਖਾਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਹੈ, ਜੋ ਹੁਣ ਸਾਡੇ ਭੋਜਨ ਅਤੇ ਖੂਨ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਬਣ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਉਦਯੋਗਿਕ ਇਕਾਈਆਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਦਰਿਆਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਹੇਠਲੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੁੱਟਿਆ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਜ਼ਹਿਰੀਲਾ ਕੂੜਾ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵੀ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਬਣਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। ਪ੍ਰਦੂਸ਼ਿਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡ ਬਿਮਾਰੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਮਾਰ ਹੇਠ ਹਨ।
ਰਿਪੋਰਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਲਾਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਉੱਚੀਆਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਿਆਰੀ ਸਿਹਤ ਸਹੂਲਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਾਰੇ ਮਰੀਜ਼ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਿਰ ਇਲਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਵਾ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ। 'ਕੈਂਸਰ ਟ੍ਰੇਨ' ਵਜੋਂ ਜਾਣੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਬਠਿੰਡਾ ਤੋਂ ਬੀਕਾਨੇਰ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਰੇਲਗੱਡੀ ਅੱਜ ਵੀ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਦਰਦ ਦੀ ਗਵਾਹ ਬਣੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ। ਸਰਕਾਰ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਯਤਨ ਅਜੇ ਵੀ ਇਸ ਵੱਡੇ ਸੰਕਟ ਦੇ ਮੁਕਾਬਲੇ ਨਾਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਨਜ਼ਰ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।

While the government has launched various initiatives, they appear insufficient given the magnitude of the crisis.
