Elections in Five States, Punjab Investment Summit Concludes, and Bharat Ratna Demand for Kanshi Ram — Indian Updates
Monday 16 March 2026 — Ranjodh Singh and senior journalist Pritam Singh Rupal bring you today's Indian Updates on Radio Haanji 1674 AM. India's political calendar is set for a major chapter with five state assembly elections now confirmed. Punjab ends its Progressive Investors Summit on a high note. And a significant political debate has erupted over recognising Bahujan leader Manyavar Kanshi Ram with India's highest civilian honour.
Election Commission Announces Polls in Five States
In one of the most significant political developments of 2026, the Election Commission of India announced the schedule for assembly elections in five states and union territories yesterday evening — West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar made the announcement at a press conference at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi, declaring the dates that will now shape India's political landscape through April and May.
Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will go to the polls on April 9. Tamil Nadu will vote on April 23. West Bengal, given its large electorate and complex security requirements, will vote in two phases — April 23 and April 29. The counting of votes across all five regions will take place on May 4, 2026. A total of 17.4 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes. The Model Code of Conduct came into effect immediately with the announcement, meaning no new government schemes or policy announcements can now be made in these states until the election process concludes.
These elections carry enormous political significance. West Bengal is expected to see a direct clash between the ruling Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and the BJP, which is pushing hard to expand its foothold in eastern India. Kerala will see the traditional contest between the Left Democratic Front and the United Democratic Front. Tamil Nadu remains the heartland of Dravidian politics, with the DMK government of MK Stalin facing its first major electoral test. For the Punjabi community watching from Australia and Singapore, the results of these elections will have a direct bearing on national politics in India heading into 2027.
Progressive Punjab Investors Summit — Rs 12,250 Crore Committed
The three-day Progressive Punjab Investors Summit 2026 concluded today in Mohali with investors committing a total of Rs 12,250 crore in the state over the next three to four years. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann hailed the outcome as a turning point for Punjab's industrial future, saying the summit had sent a clear message that Punjab was ready for a new era of growth and employment.
Among the major commitments, Plaksha University pledged Rs 5,000 crore to develop a world-class education and technology institution in Punjab. German biofuels company Verbio India announced an investment of Rs 4,000 crore. Nahar Industries committed Rs 1,500 crore, while Tynor Orthotics pledged Rs 1,000 crore with the ambition of becoming the largest orthopaedic aids manufacturer across 100 countries. The summit had already seen Rs 10,000 crore committed on its first day, with global names including ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel, JSW and Trident Group announcing major expansion plans in the state.
AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal, who also addressed the summit, said Punjab had attracted Rs 1.5 lakh crore in investment over the past four years, with a 45-day single-window clearance system now in place to fast-track industrial approvals. For the Punjabi diaspora in Australia, this summit represents tangible progress in the homeland — investment that creates jobs and economic opportunity for families back in Punjab.
BJP Moga Rally — Amit Shah Goes Solo for 2027, SAD Responds
Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the BJP's Badlaav Rally (Change Rally) at Killi Chahlan village in Moga on Saturday, officially ending any speculation about a BJP-Akali Dal alliance for the 2027 Punjab assembly elections. Wearing a saffron turban and opening with Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh, Shah declared that the BJP would contest all 117 Punjab assembly seats on its own, saying the party was done playing the "chhota bhai" (younger brother) to the Akali Dal.
Shah promised to make Punjab drug-free within two years if the BJP came to power and attacked the AAP government over what he described as administrative failure, remote control governance from Delhi, and a deteriorating law and order situation. He also promised an anti-conversion law as the party's first legislation in Punjab. The rally was held at the same location where the AAP had held its own anti-drug campaign earlier this year — a deliberate political statement by the BJP.
Responding on Sunday, Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal described the upcoming 2027 elections as a fight against "Delhi-based parties" who came to Punjab only to rule and exploit it. Badal said neither Congress, BJP nor AAP could have the same concern for Punjabis as the SAD, and called on voters to reject outside parties in favour of those rooted in Punjab's soil and culture. Punjab Congress also dismissed the Moga rally as an "outsourced show" with people transported from neighbouring states.
North India Weather — Conditions Changing
Weather conditions across north India have shifted over the past few days, with temperatures dropping and unseasonal rain and hailstorms reported in parts of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. Farmers in Punjab are particularly concerned about the impact on standing wheat crops, which are in the critical ripening phase. The India Meteorological Department has issued advisories for parts of the region and farmers have been urged to avoid harvesting until conditions stabilise.
Bharat Ratna for Kanshi Ram — Congress and BSP Both Demand It
Yesterday, 15 March 2026, was the 92nd birth anniversary of Manyavar Kanshi Ram — the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party and one of the most transformative figures in India's post-independence political history. The occasion sparked a significant political debate over whether Kanshi Ram deserves India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
Congress Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi wrote a formal letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday requesting that Kanshi Ram be awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Gandhi described Kanshi Ram as a great warrior of social justice and the guiding light of Bahujan consciousness, saying the honour would recognise his immense contribution to Indian democracy and the empowerment of millions of marginalised people. Gandhi had attended a programme in Lucknow on March 13 where the demand was formally passed as a resolution.
BSP chief Mayawati also demanded that the BJP government confer the Bharat Ratna on Kanshi Ram without delay. However, Mayawati simultaneously launched a sharp attack on the Congress party, asking how Congress could now demand this honour when it never declared a single day of national mourning when Kanshi Ram passed away, and never gave the Bharat Ratna to Dr BR Ambedkar during its years in power. Mayawati warned BSP supporters to stay alert to what she called Congress's attempts to weaken the BSP ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh elections. The political dynamics around this demand are therefore complex — both parties want the honour for Kanshi Ram, but each is using the demand to target the other.
