Thaapi: Neeru Bajwa and Sunny Singh Lead a Powerful Story of Women's Kabaddi and Family Legacy

Punjabi cinema takes a defining leap into women-centric sports dramas with the theatrical release of Thaapi. Directed and written by acclaimed filmmaker Jagdeep Warring, the film blends fierce athletic grit with rural cultural drama, delivering an emotional narrative anchored in courage, heritage, and identity.

Presented by Smarters Films in association with Neeru Bajwa Entertainment, Thaapi challenges deep-rooted patriarchal norms through Punjab’s traditional contact sport: kabaddi.

The Heart of the Plot: Reclaiming Pride in the Mud Arena

At the core of Thaapi lies an age-old social dilemma: an ageing wrestler's stubborn yearning for a male heir to continue his ancestral wrestling legacy. However, tradition meets fierce defiance when his determined daughter-in-law, Kammo (played by Neeru Bajwa), decides to rewrite the rules of lineage.

Stepping away from silent obedience, Kammo brings together a group of young village girls to assemble an underdog women’s kabaddi team. Facing heavy social disapproval, mockery, and domestic pressure, these six young athletes strap up their boots, train in open village clearings, and step into the high-stakes kabaddi arena. The narrative revolves around the powerful truth captured in the film's tagline: Legacy is not simply born; it must be fought for and created.

Stellar Cast and Powerhouse Debut

The film showcases a balanced blend of established Punjabi cinema veterans and emerging talent:

  • Neeru Bajwa as Kammo: Delivers an inspiring performance as a mentor and catalyst for change, moving beyond conventional heroine roles into a determined, grounded community leader.

  • Sunny Singh: The well-known Bollywood actor (Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) marks his debut in Punjabi cinema, bringing freshness and emotional weight to the screen.

  • The Ensemble: The kabaddi squad and village residents are portrayed by Hashneen Chauhan, Pawan Johal, Simran Chahal, Saman Rupowali, Nikita Grover, Parveen Khan, Sukhwinder Chahal, Seema Kaushal, Tarsem Paul, Kewal Dhaliwal, Nalkeet Rauni, and Gopi Bhalla.

Rural Authenticity Meets High-Octane Sports Drama

Unlike formulaic sports flicks where athletic competitions serve merely as a backdrop, Thaapi treats kabaddi as an authentic metaphor for female resilience. The training montages, village courtyards, and packed circular kabaddi stadiums capture Punjab’s vibrant rural sports culture. Cinematographer Harpreet and music directors Gurmoh and Kevin Roy George enrich the emotional highs, grounding every tackle, raid, and confrontation in raw realism.

Production and Worldwide Release

Produced by Amanpreet Singh under Smarters Films alongside Neeru Bajwa Entertainment, Thaapi is distributed across international markets by Panorama Studios and Anand Pandit Motion Pictures. The film releases worldwide on 16th October, offering families, sports enthusiasts, and regional cinema fans an empowering cinematic experience.
