Bengal Bureaucratic Purge, Nitish Kumar Moves to Rajya Sabha, and Sonam Wangchuk's Release Sparks Ladakh Rally
Tuesday 17 March 2026 — Ranjodh Singh and senior journalist Pritam Singh Rupal bring you today's Indian Updates on Radio Haanji 1674 AM. It has been an extraordinary 24 hours in Indian politics. The Election Commission has conducted an unprecedented purge of West Bengal's top officials hours after announcing the election schedule, triggering a furious response from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Bihar's longest-serving chief minister has resigned to take a Rajya Sabha seat. The Punjab Vidhan Sabha has passed a historic resolution on the Kanshi Ram Bharat Ratna demand. And two days after climate activist Sonam Wangchuk was freed from six months of detention, the people of Ladakh have taken to the streets in their thousands.
West Bengal — Election Commission Removes Five Top Officials, Mamata Hits Back
In one of the most aggressive interventions by the Election Commission in recent memory, the ECI removed five of West Bengal's most senior officials within hours of announcing the state's assembly election schedule on Sunday. Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty — widely seen as a close confidante of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who was photographed with her at the I-PAC office during Enforcement Directorate raids in January — was replaced by Dushyant Nariala, an IAS officer of the 1993 batch. Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena was replaced by Sanghamitra Ghosh. Director General of Police Peeyush Pandey was replaced by Siddh Nath Gupta. Kolkata's Police Commissioner was replaced by Ajay Kumar Nand. A fifth official, the ADG Law and Order, was also removed.
The Election Commission's letter to the West Bengal government was blunt: all removed officers were to be excluded from any election-related assignment until the completion of polls. The reshuffle, described by political observers as unprecedented in West Bengal's recent administrative history, was the Commission's clearest signal yet that it intends to ensure free and fair elections in a state where allegations of administrative bias have been made for years.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded immediately and forcefully. In her letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, she described the sweeping transfers as carried out without any cogent reasons and without any allegation of violation, misconduct or lapse in connection with the conduct of elections. She called the move "unilateral" and "unprecedented," arguing that it violated the established convention of asking the state government to submit a panel of officers for consideration. Slamming the poll body, Mamata said the ECI was working at the behest of the BJP. TMC supporters and party leaders have rallied around Banerjee, while the BJP has welcomed the changes as essential to ensuring a level playing field for what is expected to be one of the most hotly contested elections in India's recent history.
Rajya Sabha Results — NDA Sweeps Bihar, Nitish Kumar Heads to Delhi
In a development that signals a major shift in Bihar's political landscape, JD-U supremo and Bihar's longest-serving chief minister Nitish Kumar and new BJP president Nitin Nabin were elected to the Rajya Sabha as the ruling NDA swept the elections held for 11 seats on Monday. The NDA won all five Bihar seats comfortably, with Nitish Kumar and Nitin Nabin receiving 44 first-preference votes each — well above the 41 needed to win.
Nitish Kumar's move to the Rajya Sabha means he will step down as Bihar Chief Minister — a position he has held for most of the past two decades. He has posted a message assuring the people of Bihar that his bond with the state will remain strong even from Delhi, and that he will continue working for its development. The question of who will succeed him as Chief Minister is now the dominant political story in Bihar.
In Haryana, the counting of the two Rajya Sabha seats has been put on hold after both Congress and BJP raised objections over alleged violations of vote secrecy. The Election Commission is yet to resolve the dispute. In Odisha, BJP won three of the four available seats amid reports of cross-voting by Congress and BJD legislators.
Haryana — 1-1 Rajya Sabha Stalemate
With counting suspended in Haryana amid the vote secrecy dispute, the two seats remain in limbo. Congress holds 37 MLAs in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, and the BJP governs the state. Both parties are locked in a dispute over whether certain votes were cast correctly and secretly. The Election Commission is expected to make a ruling on how to proceed, which could result in a recount or a fresh poll for the disputed ballots.
Punjab Vidhan Sabha — Kanshi Ram Bharat Ratna Resolution Passed
The Punjab Legislative Assembly has passed a formal resolution calling on the Central Government to posthumously award the Bharat Ratna — India's highest civilian honour — to Manyavar Kanshi Ram, the founder of the Bahujan Samaj Party and one of the most transformative figures in India's post-independence political history. The resolution was passed unanimously, reflecting broad cross-party acknowledgement of Kanshi Ram's immense contribution to the empowerment of Bahujan communities across India. The move puts additional political pressure on the BJP-led Central Government, which now faces formal resolutions and letters from multiple parties and state governments demanding the honour.
Bhagwant Mann — Religious Conflict Warning on BJP Punjab
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann issued a sharp warning on Monday, stating that if the BJP comes to power in Punjab in the 2027 assembly elections, it could trigger religious tensions and communal conflict in the state. Mann was responding to Home Minister Amit Shah's Moga rally declaration that the BJP would contest all 117 Punjab seats alone. The Chief Minister accused the BJP of attempting to divide Punjab along religious lines for electoral gain and urged Punjabis to remain vigilant. The BJP has dismissed Mann's comments as fear-mongering by a government desperate to hold power in the face of a growing challenge.
Ladakh — Sonam Wangchuk Released, Mass Rallies Follow
Climate activist and Ladakh statehood movement leader Sonam Wangchuk was released from custody on Saturday, 14 March, after nearly six months of detention under the National Security Act. The Central Government revoked his detention, stating that the decision was taken to "facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders" in Ladakh.
Two days after his release, Ladakh's streets filled with demonstrators as rallies were held in Leh and Kargil towns to demand statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule. The protests, called by the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, drew large crowds despite restrictions and heavy security deployment across the Union Territory. Kargil and the adjoining town of Drass observed a complete shutdown. It was the first major public demonstration by the Leh Apex Body since violent clashes in September 2025 left four people dead.
Wangchuk is best known internationally for his engineering and environmental conservation work in the Himalayas, and was one of the inspirations for the character of the inventor in the Bollywood film 3 Idiots. His six-month detention under one of India's most stringent security laws drew international attention and condemnation from human rights organisations. With his release and the resumption of public protests, the Ladakh statehood movement is back on the national agenda with significant momentum. The next round of talks with the Union Home Ministry's High-Powered Committee is now eagerly awaited.
