Flight operations in India have been severely impacted due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia and the resulting unsafe airspace. Approximately 100 flights scheduled to operate from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport and Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport have been canceled. This decision follows escalating tensions in the Gulf region and the closure of airspace by several countries.
Most of the canceled flights were bound for Middle Eastern nations such as Iran, Israel, and other neighboring regions. Due to this sudden development, thousands of passengers are stranded at airports, waiting for a way to reach their destinations. Airline companies have stated that halting flights was necessary to ensure passenger safety, as flying over war-torn areas could prove dangerous.
Many flights have also been rerouted, leading to increased travel time and operational costs. Massive crowds of passengers are being seen at the airports, with people struggling to get information regarding ticket refunds or the next available flights. The administration has set up additional help desks to assist those affected.
This situation is highly significant for the Punjabi and Indian community living in Australia, as many use these airports and transit routes to travel between India and Australia, and their travel plans may be severely disrupted.
