The Unpredictable Old Man Under the Tree
The story opens with Mahatma Buddha and his disciples visiting a village. Underneath a sprawling tree sat an old, frail man.
Seeing him cry one second and burst into laughter the next, Buddha’s disciples assumed he had lost his mental balance. They approached Buddha and said:
Buddha gently corrected them, explaining that the old man was not insane—he possessed vast life experience and profound wisdom. When the disciples offered him food, the old man ate gratefully, weeping with every bite, and then laughing again once he finished.
When asked why he was acting this way, he began revealing his life's painful journey.
Youthful Arrogance & Regret
In his youth, the old man was rebellious and self-centered. He felt irritated by his father’s strictness and discipline, mistakenly thinking his father was obsessed only with money and work.
In his stupidity, a bitter thought entered his mind: Life would be much better if my father wasn't around. Soon after, his father fell ill and passed away. Though he initially felt "free," the cold harsh reality of the world hit him quickly. Without his father's protective shadow, relatives and society exploited him, forcing him to face bitter hardships alone.
When History Repeated Itself
Years passed, he got married, and raised two sons of his own. He poured his blood and sweat into building a future for them. But as his sons grew up, the cycle of karma came full circle.
His sons started holding grudges against him, complaining about his drinking and demanding his business and assets. When he became sick and bedridden, his sons viewed him as nothing more than a burden:
-
(First Son): Completely refused to take care of him, saying he had his own family to manage.
-
(Second Son): Agreed to care for him only after tricking him into transferring all property and savings to his name—and then abandoned his care completely.
Lying helpless on his bed, the old man saw his own past reflected in his sons' eyes. He realized he was suffering the exact consequences of how he had once treated his own father.
Why He Cried and Why He Laughed
The old man explained to the disciples why his mood kept shifting:
(Why He Wept): Deep guilt for disrespecting his father in his youth, realizing that his current misery was his own karma returning to him.
-
(Why He Laughed): Gratitude for Divine Grace (ਰਹਿਮਤ). He realized that when you surrender your burdens to God (ਰੱਬ), life brings you what you need—just as the disciples unexpectedly brought him food when he was hungry.
