On 24 March 2026, Ranjodh Singh brings you the stories making headlines across Australia and the world in today's edition of Today Updates on Radio Haanji 1674 AM — from a landmark United Nations vote on Gaza to a devastating house fire that has shaken Western Sydney, along with the latest from the Ukraine conflict, the Moscow terror investigation, IPL cricket and tennis.
UN Security Council Passes Historic Gaza Ceasefire Resolution
In a landmark moment at the United Nations, the Security Council passed Resolution 2728 — demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan, as well as the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages held since the October 7 attacks. The resolution was adopted with 14 votes in favour, with the United States choosing to abstain rather than use its veto for the first time since the Gaza conflict began. The vote was met with applause inside the chamber, with several delegates describing it as long overdue. The resolution also calls for unhindered humanitarian access into Gaza and demands all parties comply with their obligations under international law. Critics, however, noted that resolutions of this kind have historically struggled to produce immediate results on the ground, and the absence of a "permanent" ceasefire clause — pushed for by Russia and ultimately rejected — has drawn concern from some council members about what happens once Ramadan ends.
Russia Launches Major Missile and Drone Assault on Ukraine
Russia launched a significant overnight wave of missile and drone strikes against Ukraine, with both Kyiv and the western Lviv region coming under sustained attack. Ukraine's air force reported that 29 cruise missiles and 28 Iranian-made Shahed drones were deployed, with Ukrainian air defences downing 18 missiles and 25 drones. In a development that caused immediate alarm among NATO members, one of the Russian cruise missiles briefly entered Polish airspace — spending approximately 39 seconds over the Lublin region near the village of Oserdow before returning. Poland's armed forces activated all necessary procedures, scrambling allied aircraft and filing a formal diplomatic protest with Moscow. Poland is a NATO member, and any breach of its airspace carries significant escalatory risk. Ukrainian officials said the attacks targeted critical infrastructure in the Lviv region, while in Kyiv, air defence systems intercepted a dozen missiles, with no immediate reports of major casualties.
Moscow Terror Attack: Death Toll Rises to 137, Four Suspects in Court
The death toll from the horrific terror attack on Moscow's Crocus City Hall concert venue has risen to 137, including three children, Russia's Investigative Committee confirmed. The attack, which took place just days earlier, saw four gunmen open fire on concertgoers before setting the venue ablaze — in what has become the deadliest terrorist act on Russian soil in decades. The Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISIS-K) claimed responsibility. The four main suspects, all Tajik nationals, appeared in court on terrorism charges. They showed visible signs of injury, with human rights organisations raising serious concerns about their treatment in custody. Three of the men reportedly pleaded guilty to the charges. Russian President Vladimir Putin has vowed retribution, while also attempting to link the attack to Ukraine — a claim Kyiv, and Western governments, have firmly rejected.
Western Sydney: Man Arrested After Three Children Die in House Fire
In deeply distressing news from New South Wales, police have arrested a 28-year-old man following a house fire in Lalor Park in Western Sydney that claimed the lives of three young children. Emergency services were called to the home in the early hours of the morning, where two boys aged two and four were rushed to Westmead Hospital in critical condition but could not be saved. A ten-month-old girl was found deceased after firefighters extinguished the blaze. Police are investigating the incident as a domestic-related multiple homicide. Officers allege that the arrested man actively frustrated their attempts to rescue the children. Four other children from the same house were taken to hospital in stable condition. NSW Premier Chris Minns described the tragedy as a horrifying and senseless act, as the community grappled with one of the most heartbreaking stories to emerge from the state in recent memory.
Brisbane: Body Discovered in Park Sparks Major Investigation
Queensland police have launched a major investigation after a body was discovered in a Brisbane park. Authorities have confirmed the case is being treated as suspicious and that specialist investigators are involved. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
Victoria Introduces New Housing Tax to Fund Social Homes
The Victorian Government has announced plans for a new Social and Affordable Housing Contribution — a levy of 1.75 per cent on new residential developments of three or more dwellings. The tax, intended to generate funding for social and affordable housing across the state, would channel proceeds into the Social Housing Growth Fund, to be allocated to community housing agencies. The announcement has drawn a mixed response. Supporters argue that Victoria urgently needs more social housing, with estimates suggesting thousands of new homes are required over the next decade. Industry groups, however, have warned that the tax will add significantly to the cost of new homes, placing further pressure on buyers in an already strained market. The measure is yet to pass through Parliament.
IPL 2024: Rajasthan Royals Beat Lucknow Super Giants in Season Opener
The Indian Premier League is underway and the Rajasthan Royals got their campaign off to a strong start, defeating the Lucknow Super Giants by 20 runs in the opening fixture at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Captain Sanju Samson was the standout performer with the bat, smashing an unbeaten 82 off just 52 balls to power the Royals to a total of 193 for 4. In reply, KL Rahul's Lucknow side showed fight — with Rahul himself contributing 58 and Nicholas Pooran a brilliant 64 — but ultimately fell short on 173. Trent Boult and Sandeep Sharma were the pick of the Royals' bowlers. It was a commanding start to the season for one of the tournament's most storied franchises.
Djokovic Withdraws from Miami Open
World number one Novak Djokovic has confirmed his withdrawal from the Miami Open, citing the need to balance his private and professional commitments at this stage of his career. The announcement came shortly after Djokovic suffered a surprise third-round defeat at Indian Wells to world number 123 Luca Nardi — the lowest-ranked player to beat the Serbian at a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 event. Djokovic, a six-time Miami champion, said he hopes to return to the tournament in future years. With his eye now on the clay court season and the Paris Olympics, fans will have to wait a little longer to see the champion back in action.
