Today Updates — 19 March 2026 | Iran War Day 20, Cyclone Narelle Warning and Iran Strikes Australian Base in UAE — Radio Haanji

Thursday 19 March 2026 — Ranjodh Singh brings you today's Today Updates on Radio Haanji 1674 AM, covering one of the heaviest news days of the year. A cyclone is bearing down on Far North Queensland, Iran has struck the Australian military base in the UAE, oil is above $108 a barrel, and the NDIS fraud crackdown delivered two major developments in a single day.

Iran War Day 20 — Two Senior Officials Killed, Brent Crude Surges

Israel confirmed the killing of two senior Iranian figures over the past 48 hours: National Security Council Chief Ali Larijani and intelligence minister Esmaeil Khatib, both eliminated in targeted strikes. Iran retaliated with a fresh missile and drone assault on Israel overnight, killing two people near Tel Aviv. Significantly, Iran also struck Israel's South Pars gas field — the world's largest natural gas reserve — marking a major escalation of energy infrastructure targeting. Brent crude surged 4.7 per cent to $108.28 a barrel as markets reacted. The Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed to US and Israeli-linked shipping.

Iran Vows a Surprise — Trump's Coalition Attempt Collapses

Iran's leadership has warned that a significant surprise response against the United States and Israel is being prepared. On Truth Social, Trump called on China, France, Japan, South Korea and the UK to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz — all refused. European leaders said it was not their war. Trump slammed NATO as making a "very foolish mistake." Senior counterterrorism official Joe Kent resigned from the Trump administration, publicly stating the US was drawn into this conflict solely because of pressure from Israel, not any direct threat to American security.

Crude Oil — The Whole World Is Paying

With Brent crude above $108 — up from $71 at the start of the year — the Iran war's energy crisis is now being felt in every economy on earth. Australian petrol prices have surpassed $2.20 a litre nationally. Russia, able to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, is reportedly benefitting as global markets scramble for supply. The Trump administration temporarily eased sanctions on Russian oil to manage the shortfall — a move critics say funds Moscow's war in Ukraine while Washington wages its own war in the Gulf.

Pakistan and Afghanistan — Eid Ceasefire Declared

Pakistan and Afghanistan announced a five-day ceasefire from midnight last night through to Monday 23 March, honouring Eid-ul-Fitr at the request of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey. Pakistan warned any cross-border terrorist attack would immediately end the pause. The announcement came one day after mass funerals for victims of the Kabul hospital airstrike, which killed 408 people and has been condemned worldwide. Pakistan denies targeting a hospital; Afghanistan and the international community have rejected that denial.

Zelensky in London — "Don't Forget About Us"

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited London, meeting King Charles, Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO's Secretary-General. In Parliament, he warned the world not to let the Iran war overshadow Ukraine and revealed that 201 Ukrainian military experts are currently in the Middle East sharing anti-drone expertise. The UK and Ukraine signed a new defence agreement, with Britain pledging £500,000 to establish an AI centre of excellence within Ukraine's Ministry of Defence.

Lebanon — UN Records 886 Deaths, Nearly One Million Displaced

The United Nations has documented serious human rights violations in Lebanon following Israeli military operations. As of the latest figures, 886 people have been killed — including 111 children — since Israeli strikes on Hezbollah targets began on 2 March. Evacuation orders could push total displacement close to one million people. Israel denies targeting civilians and says it is responding to Hezbollah attacks launched in support of Iran. The UN is formally recording all incidents.

Cuba — 11 Million Left Without Power After National Grid Collapses

Cuba suffered a complete nationwide blackout on 16 March after its electricity grid collapsed, leaving all 11 million residents without power. It was the island's third major blackout in four months, driven by a severe fuel shortage after oil shipments stopped three months ago. President Díaz-Canel said the government is operating on solar and natural gas while recovery continues. Power has since been partially restored across most of Havana.

US Storms — 1,100 Flights Cancelled, Shutdown Compounds the Crisis

Severe winter storms across the United States cancelled more than 1,100 flights and delayed 7,300 others at major hubs including Chicago, New York and Dallas. The disruption has been worsened by staffing shortages in transport and security services, as the ongoing US government partial shutdown has delayed pay for non-essential federal employees — pushing some to leave their posts at exactly the moment they are needed most.

Iran Strikes Australian Base in UAE — Albanese Confirms No Injuries

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that an Iranian projectile struck near the Al Minhad Air Base in the UAE at approximately 9:15 am AEDT Wednesday — Australia's primary military headquarters in the Middle East. A small fire caused minor damage to an accommodation block and a medical facility. No Australian Defence Force personnel were injured. Albanese said the Iranian regime is engaging in random attacks across the region. All ADF members deployed to the area are confirmed safe.

Cyclone Narelle — Category 4 and Intensifying, Landfall Friday Morning

Severe Tropical Cyclone Narelle is a Category 4 system forecast to reach Category 5 before making landfall between Lockhart River and Cooktown in Far North Queensland early Friday 20 March. Wind gusts exceeding 250 kilometres per hour, dangerous storm surge and flash flooding of up to 350 millimetres are expected across Cape York Peninsula. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described it as potentially the biggest cyclone many Queenslanders have ever seen. Residents between Lockhart River and Cape Tribulation must act on emergency warnings now. For assistance, call the State Emergency Service on 132 500.

RBA Rate Hike — Compounding Pressure on Households

The RBA's confirmed cash rate rise to 4.10 per cent now sits alongside petrol above $2.20 a litre nationally, with all four major banks forecasting a further hike to 4.35 per cent in May. For Punjabi and Indian families managing mortgages in Melbourne and Sydney, this combination of rising rates and surging fuel costs is the most significant cost-of-living pressure since 2022.

NDIS — Melbourne Jailing and Fresh Sydney Fraud Raid

Two major NDIS fraud developments occurred on Wednesday. In Melbourne, Kim Michael Schubert was sentenced to three years in jail for sharing the details of 90 NDIS participants with a fraudulent provider, enabling over $190,000 in false claims. Separately, the Fraud Fusion Taskforce executed a search warrant in Chipping Norton, Sydney, targeting an alleged $3.5 million fraud scheme. The taskforce now has over 635 active investigations underway and has secured 23 convictions since 2022.
