Oslo, October 10 – The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced today that the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded to Venezuela's opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. She is receiving this award for her tireless efforts in promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. Maria Corina Machado, known as Venezuela's Iron Lady, is seen as one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times. Maria Corina Machado was born in 1967 in Venezuela and studied engineering and finance. She worked briefly in business but later focused on social work. In 1992, she founded the Athena Foundation, which works to help street children in Caracas. In 2002, she co-founded Sumate, an organization dedicated to promoting free and fair elections and conducting election monitoring. In 2010, she was elected to the National Assembly with a record number of votes. Throughout her political career, Maria Corina Machado has faced numerous obstacles and has been disqualified from running in elections multiple times.

In the 2024 elections, Maria Corina Machado mobilized the opposition widely and brought large numbers of people to the polls. The opposition collected systematic evidence of their victory, but the regime declared its own win and tightened its grip on power.
