On the first day of the New Year, India and Pakistan took a significant step toward maintaining transparency and a humanitarian approach in their relations. Following their annual tradition on January 1st, both nations exchanged lists of their nuclear installations under a bilateral agreement that prohibits either country from attacking the other's nuclear facilities. This agreement was signed in 1988 and has been implemented consistently since 1991.
Simultaneously, both countries handed over lists of each other's civilians and fishermen currently held in their respective prisons. India urged Pakistan to expedite the release of Indian prisoners and fishermen who have already completed their sentences. Such exchanges take place twice a year, on January 1st and July 1st.
While this exercise remains a formal procedure, it signifies the commitment to keeping communication channels open and reflects a humanitarian bond despite the underlying tensions between the two neighbors. India particularly emphasized the need to resolve cases involving missing Indian defense personnel. These lists often serve as a beacon of hope for families waiting for years for the return of their loved ones.
