US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that India is completely cutting back on Russian oil purchases. He emphasized that India is making a "complete" reduction in buying Russian oil, while China will also cut back "very substantially." Trump made these remarks on Saturday while en route to Malaysia aboard Air Force One during a conversation with reporters. He indicated the possibility of discussing Russian oil purchases with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their meeting and hopes it will lead to a "complete deal."
Trump and his administration have repeatedly claimed over the past few days that India has assured them it will significantly reduce its oil imports from Russia. However, India has rejected this, stating that its energy policy is driven by national interests, particularly ensuring affordable and secure supply for its consumers. Indian officials have said they are unaware of any such conversation with Trump and there is no agreement to change the policy.
The US alleges that by purchasing crude oil from Moscow, India is providing financial support to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the Ukraine war. In this context, the US has recently imposed sanctions on Russian oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil and increased tariffs on Indian exports to 50 percent. These steps are aimed at economically weakening Russia and ending the Ukraine war. However, recent data shows that India's Russian oil imports are increasing in October 2025, reaching about 1.9 million barrels per day, which is 20 percent higher than previous months. Russia accounts for 34 percent of India's total oil imports.
Regarding China, according to Trump's claim, Chinese state oil companies have temporarily suspended purchases of Russian oil due to new US sanctions, though pipeline supplies continue. China is the largest buyer of Russian oil, sharing nearly 75 percent of Russia's crude exports with India. This incident is heightening tensions in global energy politics, where the US is trying to isolate Russia, but India and China are prioritizing their economic interests.
