Thai and Cambodian soldiers engaged in a Thailand-Cambodia border clash today, exchanging gunfire that resulted in at least 11 civilians killed and one Thai soldier dead. Both nations accused each other of initiating the military clashes and have downgraded diplomatic relations.
Thailand has border checkpoints sealed along its frontier with Cambodia. Since a landmine incident in May that killed a Cambodian soldier, relations between these Southeast Asian neighbors have rapidly deteriorated, fueled by nationalist tensions. The Thai army reported the heaviest loss of life in Sisaket province, where Cambodian rocket attacks on a gas station killed six people. At least 14 people were injured across three border provinces, including Surin province, Sisaket province, and Ubon Ratchathani.
The Thai army conducted Thai F-16 airstrikes on Cambodian military targets today. Cambodia’s Defense Ministry stated that Thai fighter jets dropped bombs near the Preah Vihear temple. Both governments vowed to respond to each other’s actions. Thai Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri said military clashes are ongoing in at least six border areas.
The first clash occurred this morning near the Ta Muen Thom temple, along the border of Thailand’s Surin province and Cambodia’s Oddar Meanchey province. A Thai video showed civilian evacuations, with people fleeing their homes and hiding in concrete bunkers amid the sound of explosions. Thailand’s Foreign Ministry stated that Cambodian rocket attacks targeted both military and non-military sites, including a hospital. Despite ASEAN mediation efforts, the situation remains tense.
