Dongara has made history as the first town in Western Australia to officially recognise its Sikh heritage with the naming of "Sikh Lane", a lasting tribute to the early Sikh settlers who helped shape the region’s identity.
The street naming ceremony, attended by around 400 people, marked a deeply symbolic moment for both the local and wider Sikh community and was the result of more than two years of dedicated advocacy and historical research.
The recognition brings to light the remarkable story of Sikh pioneers like Sojan Singh and his brother Pola Singh, who arrived in Dongara in the late 1890s.
Starting as hawkers, they quickly established themselves in business, with Sojan opening a general store on Irwin Road (now Moreton Terrace).
By the 1911 Census, Sikhs made up 4% of Dongara’s population—the highest in Western Australia at the time—highlighting their significance in the region’s development.
But over time, restrictive immigration policies like the White Australia Policy reduced their numbers and limited the continuation of their community presence.
Sikh history advocate and one of the event coordinators Tarun Preet Singh emphasised the importance of local participation in the event.
“This was an exceptionally rare and meaningful experience—unlike anything previously observed in Australia—where a local community organised and hosted an entire event solely to honour the Sikh community,” said Mr Singh in an interview with Radio Haanji.
“We shared langar with the residents of Dongara, and the event drew an attendance of over 400 individuals.
"The hospitality extended to us was remarkable. Six large marquees were arranged, complete with seating, chilled bottled water, freshly brewed hot tea, and large eskies filled with ice-cold lemonade.
"Every attendee—be they local residents, descendants of Sojan Singh, or members of the broader Sikh community—was warmly welcomed and thoughtfully accommodated,” he added.
Reflecting on the significance of the event, Mr Singh remarked on the atmosphere of pride and enthusiasm that carried the day:
“The excitement of making history was so energising and deeply motivating that no one expressed any sense of fatigue—neither through words nor behaviour. The collective feeling of purpose and contribution was palpable throughout the event.”
“It was particularly moving to witness visiting parents from India, who, while spending time with their children in Australia, had the opportunity to learn about this rich Sikh heritage.
“For them, seeing the original buildings, meeting the descendants of early pioneers, and experiencing the history firsthand was truly inspiring. I believe this moment will mark the beginning of increased Sikh tourism to Dongara.”
He also acknowledged the presence of descendants of Sojan Singh at the ceremony, adding:
“It was very, very emotional and loving for us, that they have considered [themselves] to be part of the Sikh community as well.”
While speaking to Radio Haanji, Mr Singh also extended heartfelt thanks to the Irwin District Historical Society and Dongara’s local community, and acknowledged the detailed historical work carried out by Dr. Bruce Baskerville and Shirley Scotter, whose research helped bring this story to light.
“Dongara’s recognition of its Sikh heritage is a landmark moment in Australian multicultural history—one that ensures the legacy of its early Sikh pioneers endures for generations to come,” he added.
