IndiGo, the country's largest airline, appears to be emerging from its crisis, successfully regaining its operational stability (sanchalan sthirata). A spokesperson for the airline announced today that IndiGo successfully operated over 2,050 flights for the second consecutive day, indicating stabilization in its operations. Flights ran on all 138 destinations, a huge relief since the chaos began after December 8.
This crisis was triggered by major changes introduced by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in the Flight Duty Time Limit (FDTL) regulations. Under these new rules, the weekly rest period for pilots was increased from 36 hours to 48 hours, the number of night-time flights was restricted, and continuous night duty was limited to just two. The direct impact of these regulations significantly reduced the number of flights that each pilot could operate.
The problem was exacerbated by IndiGo's 'lean staff' model, as the airline had not recruited the necessary number of pilots for a long time. Consequently, IndiGo was forced to cancel a large number of flights last week. However, the airline is now consistently bringing its operations back on track, which is a positive sign for passengers and the Indian aviation industry.
