Melbourne-based Ravinder Kaur faced an unimaginable loss when her only child Rehmat Sandhu passed away at the age of 21 in 2014. Instead of letting grief consume her, she turned her pain into purpose, dedicating her life to helping others by setting up the Rehmat Sandhu Foundation.
Speaking to Radio Haanji, Ravinder Kaur shared her deeply personal journey of loss, resilience, and purpose.
"After losing my only child at the age of 21, my world completely shattered. No parent should have to go through such pain, but I knew I had two choices—let grief consume me or channel it into something meaningful. I chose the latter. My son may no longer be with me, but his spirit lives on in the work I do every day,” she said.
As a profound act of generosity, Ms Kaur donated her Melton home to Anglicare, ensuring it serves those in need and provides a safe space for the most vulnerable in the community.
"I wanted my home to be more than just bricks and walls. I wanted it to be a place where people find safety, support, and care. Helping others gives me a sense of peace, knowing that even in loss, I can still create something meaningful," she added.
Her dedication to disability inclusion and accessibility has made a lasting impact, earning Rehmat Sandhu Foundation the Disability Access and Inclusion Leader of the Year Award from the City of Melton during Australia Day Celebrations on January 26, 2025.
"Receiving this award was humbling because it wasn’t just about me—it was about our entire community’s efforts to make society more inclusive. It reminded me that small actions lead to big changes."
Beyond her contributions in Australia, Ravinder’s work has gained global recognition. On December 5, 2024, she traveled to London, representing the Rehmat Sandhu Foundation at the prestigious Global Housing, Healthcare, and Enablement Awards Gala Dinner.
There, she was honored with the Most Outstanding Contribution to Disability Participants in the World (2024) by a Not-for-Profit category.
"To stand in a room filled with global leaders in healthcare and disability services and hear my name called—it was surreal. This award is not just for me but for every person who believes in breaking barriers and advocating for equal opportunities."
For Ravinder, this journey has been about turning pain into purpose and creating a lasting impact.
"From India to Australia and then to a global stage, this journey has shown me that when we come together for a cause greater than ourselves, we can truly change lives. My mission is simple—to keep pushing for a world where inclusion is not a privilege but a right,” she said with pride.
Her story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit, reminding us all that even in the face of immense loss, one person’s determination can inspire change and transform lives.
