The nation's leading airline, IndiGo, faced a major operational disruption on Wednesday due to a severe crew shortage, forcing the company to announce flight cancellations for over 70 flights nationwide. A large number of the cancelled flights included those from Bengaluru airport and Mumbai airport. According to data from the Civil Aviation Ministry, as a result of this crisis, IndiGo's On-Time Performance (OTP) at six key domestic airports has plummeted to just 35 percent. Sources indicate that IndiGo is experiencing this significant crew shortage following the implementation of the second phase of the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules, which have placed stricter limits on the working hours of pilots and cabin crew. An IndiGo spokesperson acknowledged that several flights have faced flight delays or cancellations over the past few days. They cited multiple reasons, including technology issues, airport congestion, and other operational challenges. The airline stated that its teams are diligently working to normalize operations as quickly as possible.
