Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of India's largest carrier, IndiGo Airlines, has extended his sincerest apologies to passengers for the major flight cancellations and operational disruption experienced across the country. In a video message, Elbers acknowledged that December 5, 2025, was the most severely impacted day, during which the airline was forced to cancel over 1,000 of its usual 2,300+ daily flights.
CEO Pieter Elbers reported that the airline decided to reboot its entire system and schedule to address the issue. He stated that although this action resulted in the highest number of cancellations on a single day, it was imperative for progressive improvements moving forward. IndiGo now anticipates that flight cancellations will drop below 1,000 starting December 6.
The primary cause of this IndiGo Crisis is identified as planning gaps (leading to Crew Shortage) in the implementation of the second phase of the new Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL Rules) mandated by the aviation regulator, the DGCA. IndiGo admitted a significant disparity between their actual crew requirement and availability. However, the DGCA has provided temporary relief to IndiGo Airlines in implementing specific FDTL norms, which Elbers described as "very helpful."
Pieter Elbers assured the public that the operational situation is expected to return to full normalization between December 10 and 15, thus ending the difficulties faced by passengers.
