According to Dawn, the Pakistani passport is listed among the weakest passports in the Henley Passport Index 2025, offering visa-free access to only 32 destinations. In contrast, other Asian countries have emerged with the strongest passports globally.
Per the Henley Passport Index 2025, Pakistan 96th in the global passport ranking, ahead of conflict-affected nations like Somalia, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and the Afghanistan passport. The Pakistani passport has seen a slight improvement, as in 2024, it was tied with Yemen as the fourth-worst globally.
The Henley Passport Index 2025 evaluates visa-free access for 199 passports across 227 destinations using IATA data. It ranks countries based on the number of places passport holders can travel without a prior visa. A score of 1 is awarded when no visa is required, or when visa-on-arrival (VOA), visitor permits, or electronic travel authority (ETA) are available.
Conversely, a score of 0 is assigned when a visa or government-approved e-visa is required before travel. Dawn notes this also applies to cases where visa-on-arrival requires prior government approval.
The Singapore passport tops the list, granting visa-free access to 195 destinations. The Japan passport and South Korea share second place with 190 destinations. Seven European Union countries—Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain—rank third. Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and Sweden tie for fourth. New Zealand, Greece, and Switzerland share fifth place.
The UK and US have seen declines in their global passport ranking. The UK, first in 2015, is now sixth, and the US, first in 2014, is now 10th.
The Indian passport made the most significant leap, climbing to India 77th in the past six months, offering visa-free access to 59 destinations. This reflects improved travel freedom and diplomatic relations.
