ਸਿੱਖ ਕੋਲੀਸ਼ਨ ਦੀ ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਸਟੇਟ ਪਾਲਿਸੀ ਮੈਨੇਜਰ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਸੰਧੂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀ ਨੇ ਐਸ਼ ਕਾਲੜਾ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਬਿੱਲ ਦੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਧਰਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਤਿਉਹਾਰ ਦੀਵਾਲੀ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਲ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਸਾਰਾ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਾ ਇਸ ਦਿਨ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸਵ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਲੈ ਸਕੇ।" ਸਾਉਥ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਨੈੱਟਵਰਕ ਦੇ ਬੋਰਡ ਚੇਅਰ ਰੋਹਿਤ ਸ਼ੈਂਦ੍ਰੀਕਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਕੈਲੀਫੋਰਨੀਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਉਥ ਏਸ਼ੀਅਨ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਬਲਕਿ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਹਿੰਦੂ ਅਮਰੀਕਨ ਫਾਊਂਡੇਸ਼ਨ ਨੇ ਵੀ ਐਸ਼ ਕਾਲੜਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਦਰਸ਼ਨਾ ਪੈਟਲ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ। ਭਾਰਤੀ ਪਰਵਾਸੀ ਭਾਈਚਾਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਜਥੇਬੰਦੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਫੈਸਲੇ ਦਾ ਗਰਮਜੋਸ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।

California has declared Diwali as an official state holiday, making it the third US state to recognize the Indian festival of lights in this way. Governor Gavin Newsom signed the 'AB 268' bill introduced by Assemblymember Ash Kalra on Tuesday, which had already passed both houses of the state legislature. The bill will take effect from January 1, 2026, and will authorize public schools and community colleges to close on Diwali. State employees will have the option to take the day off, and public school students will receive excused absences to celebrate the holiday. This decision recognizes Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, and Jains who consider Diwali a significant festival.

Kalra, a Democratic member from San Jose who advanced the bill along with Assemblymember Dr. Darshana Patel, said, "Designating Diwali as an official state holiday not only recognizes its religious and historical importance but also enables the Indian diaspora and others to participate in one of the world's oldest religious festivals." California is home to the largest population of Indian Americans, and this decision sends a strong message to millions of residents who celebrate the festival of lights Diwali. Previously, Pennsylvania (in 2024) and Connecticut (in 2025) had recognized Diwali as an official state holiday. Public schools in New York City also close on Diwali.

Puneet Kaur Sandhu, senior state policy manager for the Sikh Coalition, said their organization collaborated with Ash Kalra to include language in the bill for other religions whose holidays coincide with Diwali. She added, "It's so meaningful that the entire community can take this day to celebrate." Rohit Shendrikar, board chair for the South Asian Network in Southern California, stated that this law not only recognizes the South Asian community in California but also highlights their impact on the state. The Hindu American Foundation has also praised Ash Kalra and Dr. Darshana Patel. The Indian diaspora community and various organizations have warmly welcomed this decision.

Diwali, also known as 'Deepavali' meaning 'a row of lights,' symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance by lighting lamps. The festival is celebrated with family gatherings, sibling bonds, fireworks, feasts, and prayers. This year's Diwali begins on October 20. This decision strengthens California's diversity and brings great joy to the South Asian community.
