ਸਿੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਵੱਡੇ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ। ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰੇ ਦਾ ਸ਼ਾਬਦਿਕ ਅਰਥ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਸਰਵਨਾਸ਼ ਵਰਗੇ ਸ਼ਬਦਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਲਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ‘Holocaust’ ਵੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਤਿਹਾਸਕ ਵੇਰਵਿਆਂ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਮਈ-ਜੂਨ 1746 ਈਸਵੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਅਤੇ ਫਰਵਰੀ 1762 ਈਸਵੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੂਜਾ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ। ਪਹਿਲੇ ਨੂੰ ਛੋਟਾ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰਾ ਤੇ ਦੂਸਰੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਡਾ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਵੱਡੇ ਘੱਲੂਘਾਰੇ ਬਾਰੇ ਘੋਖ ਕਰਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਰੁਪਾਲ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ - ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ "ਇੱਕ ਦੇਸ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਕੀ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਚੈ"
