Stockholm, October 9 – The Swedish Academy announced today that the 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature will be awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai. The Academy stated that he is receiving the award for his compelling and visionary oeuvre that reaffirms the power of art even in the midst of apocalyptic terror. Laszlo Krasznahorkai, who is 71 years old, has been honored for his dark, apocalyptic themes and intricate sentences that often run on for pages. He is the second Hungarian writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, following Imre Kertész, a novelist and Holocaust survivor, in 2002.

Krasznahorkai's works are characterized by absurdism and grotesque excess, and he is regarded as a great epic writer in the Central European tradition extending from Kafka to Thomas Bernhard. His debut novel 'Satantango' was published in 1985, creating a literary sensation in Hungary and serving as his breakthrough work, depicting a destitute group of residents on an abandoned collective farm in the Hungarian countryside just before the fall of communism. After reading his second book 'Az ellenállás melankóliája' (1989; The Melancholy of Resistance, 1998), American critic Susan Sontag crowned him contemporary literature's 'master of the apocalypse'. Several of his works, such as 'Satantango' and 'The Melancholy of Resistance', have been adapted into films by Hungarian director Béla Tarr.

In addition, Laszlo Krasznahorkai has developed a flowing syntax with long, winding sentences devoid of full stops, which has become his signature style. He has previously won several awards, including the 2019 National Book Award for Translated Literature and the 2015 Man Booker International Prize. He has been among the favorites for the Nobel Prize for many years and was tied with Chinese writer Can Xue as the frontrunner this year. The Nobel Committee said that his works have received widespread acclaim and capture the texture of present-day existence in terrifying, strange, appallingly comic, and often shatteringly beautiful scenes.

The Nobel Prize winner will receive 11 million Swedish Krona, which is more than 10 crore rupees, and the award will be presented on December 10 in Stockholm.
