Carney confirmed that he had apologized to Donald Trump during a dinner at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. He stated that Trump was offended by the advertisement, which he himself would not have approved, and he had warned the Ontario Premier against airing it. However, Ford had proceeded with it, and earlier claimed that Carney and his chief of staff had seen the ad beforehand, though it was later pulled. This incident poses a challenge to Canada-U.S. trade relations, as Canada is America's second-largest trading partner, and a trade war could harm jobs and the economy.
