ਇਹ 1739 ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਦੋ ਸਿੱਖ, ਬਾਬਾ ਗਰਜ਼ਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੋਤਾ ਸਿੰਘ, ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤਰਨਤਾਰਨ-ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ ਸੜਕ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਝਾੜੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੁਕੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹੀਂ ਦਿਨੀਂ ਸਿੱਖ ਰਾਤ ਨੂੰ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਕਰਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਦਿਨ ਵੇਲੇ ਲੁਕ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਸਨ। ਉਸ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਘ ਰਹੇ ਦੋ ਯਾਤਰੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰੋਂ ਦੇਖਿਆ। ਇੱਕ ਨੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਹਾ, "ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਜਾਪਦੇ ਹਨ।" ਦੂਜੇ ਨੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਗਲਤ ਹੋ। ਉਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ। ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਢੋਲ ਦੀ ਥਾਪ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਐਲਾਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੁਣਿਆ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ
