Seven Melbourne teens have been arrested in connection to a growing trend of brazen smash-and-grab-style thefts from telco stores across the city.

Police executed warrants in Melbourne’s western suburbs yesterday and Tuesday before charging teens ranging in age from 14 to 16 with more than 16 offences of theft occurring between June 21 and July 9.

All seven boys have been charged and are expected to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

This week’s arrests comes just days after detectives arrested and charged four different teenagers on Friday.

Police executed search warrants at three addresses in Point Cook, Tarneit and Truganina, arresting the four boys aged 16, 15 and two aged 14 years and recovering a range of stolen electronic devices.

North West Metro Region Commander Tim Hansen said Regional Crime Squads had been working together to disrupt this type of crime.

These thefts are occurring in busy shopping areas, with groups of offenders entering shops and grabbing property – usually mobile phones, tablets and laptops – and running from the store,” he said.

We’re treating these crimes very seriously and the community can be assured police are actively identifying and locating offenders, making swift arrests and putting them before the courts.

We are also working closely with retailers to address security issues and implement crime prevention measures, including through the National Retail Association’s Loss Prevention Committee.
