Extinction Rebellion protesters have closed one of Melbourne’s main CBD streets, blocking a number of trams and police removed people one by one.

Spring Street was closed in both directions at the Collins Street intersection as the activists dance in the rain.

Trams on Route 48, 109, 35, 11 and 12 have been stopped and commuters have been advised to instead use City Loop Trains.

A huge number of police are on the street and officers started making arrests before 12pm.

Drivers should divert to Exhibition or Russell Street if heading north or south. Alternatively, they should travel on Bourke or Lonsdale Street if going east or west.

Victoria Police have diverting traffic and will reopen the road when it is safe to do so.
