Salim Mehajer has failed to appear in court this morning on charges including perverting the course of justice following an allegedly staged car crash in 2017.

His lawyer told Parramatta District Court today he was in Fairfield Hospital seeing a specialist after breaking his hand.

She offered to show a photograph of the cast on his right arm that he had sent her.

Judge James Bennett said the matter would be stood down until 2pm today but if he did not show up a warrant would be issued for his arrest.

Outside court Solicitor Zali Burrows asked reporters not to call the former Auburn Deputy Mayor disgraced, rather “misguided”.

She said he would plead not guilty later.

Mehajer’s co-accused, Rafi Noori, was present in court and pleaded not guilty to helping stage the crash involving Mehajer’s Mercedes, which saw the former councillor taken to hospital just before he was due to appear in court over a taxi driver assault.
