Adelaide’s skyline is undergoing a major makeover with two new apartment blocks set to transform our city.
9News has been given an exclusive look at the buildings which are in a battle to become the CBD’s tallest when construction is complete later this year.
Realm Adelaide and the Adelaidean, both in the CBD’s east, are in a race to the top to become the city’s tallest buildings.
With both set to overtake the 132-metre-high Westpac House.
“These projects are city shaping projects,” Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said.
The Adelaidean is being built on Frome Street, between Rundle Street and North Terrace
The first 20 floors are for the new Crowne Hotel, with 74 apartments being built on the upper levels.
“Think it’s about time for Adelaide, I think people use the term grow up,” James Polacek from the Adelaidean said.
“The views are not surprisingly spectacular in all directions.”
While 40-storey high Realm, off nearby Pulteney Street between Rundle Mall and North Terrace, is entirely residential.
It has over 300 apartments ranging from one bedroom to penthouses with its most exclusive apartment already selling for $5.2 million.
“That’s a new record here in Adelaide, double storey four bed, five bath and the views up there will be absolutely spectacular,” Ben Small from Realm Adelaide said.
One floor a week is currently being added to Realm Adelaide and at this rate it will be ready to open by the end of the year.
And as for which building is higher – there’s little between the two skyscrapers.
Adelaidean, though, has a slight height advantage, at just under 135m that’s a couple of metres higher than Realm.
But with many more city projects still in planning it may not hold the record for long.
“Just looking at that future view of what’s in the pipeline, I think the city is going to look very different in a few years’ time,” Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said.
