Panchratni Dal Recipe Ingredients:

    • moong dal – 2 tbsp
    • masoor dal – 2 tbsp
    • toor dal – 2 tbsp
    • chana dal – 2 tbsp
    • urad dal – 2 tbsp


  • 1 medium sized onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium sized tomato finely chopped
  • 2 tsp ginger – green chillies paste
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds / jeera
  • 1 to 2 pinches of heeng
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder / haldi
  • 1 tsp coriander powder optional
  • ½ tsp garam masala powder
  • 2-3 tbsp ghee
  • 1 or 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves
  • salt as required

Panchratni Dal Recipe Method:

  1. Combine all the 5 dals in equal proportion and soak in water for 1 hour
  2. Pressure cook the dals adding 3 cups of water for 4-5 whistles
  3. In a pan heat ghee and add jeera and saute
  4. Add onions and fry till they become transparent or light brown
  5. Now add ginger green chillies paste and fry until the raw smell disappears
  6. Add tomatoes, cook till they soften and you see oil releasing from the sides
  7. Add all spice powders – turmeric powder, coriander powder and fry for a minute
  8. Now add cooked dal and mix well
  9. Add water and salt to taste
  10. Continue to stir and cook the dal for 4-5 minutes in a low to medium flame
  11. Finally, add garam masala and chopped coriander leaves
  12. Panchratni dal is ready. Serve with choice of rotis or rice
