A ferocious house fire has claimed the life of a passionate horseman in Melbourne’s north.

Darren Green’s body was found by emergency crews this morning in a cottage at the back of the Oaklands Road property in Oaklands Junction where he had lived for decades.

The 52-year-old assisted the property owners, Kathleen and Richard, in the operation of the homestead.

Mr Green was heavily involved in horse work, and was a prominent rider for the local Oaklands Hunt Club.

Emergency crews were called to the property just after 3am, with flames engulfing the building.
About 20 firefighters and four trucks were on scene to control the blaze, which took over 30 minutes to contain.

Crews located a body inside the burnt-out property and arson chemists are due to arrive today to investigate.

Neighbour Margaret Hurry said Mr Green was a “wonderful person” who “loved horses” and was a hugely important figure at the local hunt club.

“Darren has been living there for about 30 years I’d say … we’re all terribly upset,” Ms Hurry said.
