A gunman is still at large after shooting a former police detective in the face in Melbourne’s west last night.

Sid Morgan is fighting for life in the Royal Melbourne hospital with serious head injuries after he was left to die at the end of his street.

The incident took place on Spraypoint Drive with police arriving just minutes after a gunshot rang out through about 11pm.

Acting Inspector Trish Duke said the male has been taken to hospital and is in a critical condition.

Suhair Bdeiwe heard the gun shot and ran to her balcony to see a white ute speeding away from the scene.

I saw a big white ute driving badly Ms Bdeiwe said.

One neighbour told 9News they saw three people arguing in the minutes before the now real estate agent was shot in the forehead.

Security cameras picked up a ute heading in the same direction at the time of the shooting.

Detectives have established a crime scene at the location and are yet to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
