GYAAN stands for GOPIO Young Achievers Awards Night. This sold-out event in 2019 for GOPIO Sydney recognises and honours students of Indian origin for their astounding success in attaining a high ATAR score in the Higher School Certificate.
The students at GOPIO Sydney GYAAN are recognised for their great achievement and are hardworking intellectuals that will without doubt be future leaders in their fields of study and chosen careers. GOPIO Sydney celebrates this night with the students who have made their parents and the community proud, and also with their parents for the support and the sacrifices they made for their education.
GOPIO Sydney also acknowledges and provides community awards to exceptional organisations or individuals of Indian descent, who have excelled in their areas of expertise and have made a significant contribution to the wider community.
Our brilliant students were Mrinaank Sinha (99.75% and First in state in Software Design), Dharani Palanisamy (98.45%), Sourish Iyengar (97.25% and state level hockey awardee), Jishnu Thangallu (97.25%) and Rukhaiya Rangwala (First in Business Studies, all round academic excellence and exceptional community service in Domestic Violence) Our outstanding community awardees were Harman Foundation, Young Sikh Professional Network (YSPN), EKAL Vidyalaya and Dr Chandrika Subramaniyan.
The Chief Guest for GYAAN was Mr Matt Kean, the Minister for Innovation and Better regulation and our guests of honour were Michelle Rowland, the Shadow Minister for communications and Member for Greenway, Professor of Material Science Veena Sahajwalla from the University of NSW, Jag Lodia GOPIO International Oceania Coordinator, Dr Geoff Lee and Kevin Connelly, parliamentary members for Parramatta and Riverstone and David Clarke MLC.

The President of GOPIO Sydney, Jag Dhaliwal, is passionate about charitable giving. Supporting charities is at the heart of what he believes in and what he wants GOPIO Sydney to stand for. Charity is very important to a healthy society and he is committed to inspire the community to give to charity and motivate them to organise fundraisers, increase awareness of domestic violence and spend time volunteering to assist in the care of our seniors or underprivileged youth.
The health of charities is the surest indicator of the health of the society. When charities are succeeding, the community can be optimistic about the future of our society. Jag Dhaliwal believes it is more important than ever to nurture those institutions which transcend differences between us, motivate us to put self-interest aside, and collaborate and work in partnership to improve the fabric of the community.
GOPIO Sydney are proud to raise essential funds and support charities working for the members of the community in distress. In 2019, GOPIO Sydney has proudly donated substantial funds to Harman Foundation, the Kerala Flood Relief Fund and Kids with Cancer Foundation.
Maninder Singh and Harinder Kaur suffered the tragic loss of their young loving son, Harman and found their world devastated. They experienced a massive dose of grief and derived enormous strength from commencing an organisation which provides help and counselling to individuals and families, Harman Foundation. It is a Not-for-Profit charitable organisation which can be accessed by any member of the community, irrespective of race, religion or creed. They provide cost-free community support services, delivered by a committed group of volunteers, including a 24×7 crisis hotline to Bereavement services and Food for the Needy.
Kids with Cancer Foundation assist doctors, nurses, families and support groups involved in caring for the youngest of children suffering with a brain tumour, leukaemia and all other childhood cancers, from new born babies to young teenagers. The money this charity raises are allocated to benefit public hospitals with children’s oncology units and families who find themselves placed in financial difficulties due to their child being treated for cancer.
