A prisoner has been found dead in a cell at Acacia Prison sparking an internal investigation, corrective services revealed today.
The 30-year-old man was found alone and unresponsive yesterday according to Corrective Services Commissioner Tony Hassall – who offered his condolences to the man’s family in a statement this morning.
Staff and medical officers at the medium security prison in Wooroloo attempted to revive the man, but were unsuccessful.
No details of his how he died has been released at this stage but his death is being treated as a death in custody.
WA Police are investigating and are preparing a report for the Coroner, while the Department of Justice is conducting an internal review into the circumstances.
As a result of these ongoing investigations, Mr Hassell added that he would not be issuing any further comment on the death.
Acacia Prison is privately run by service provider Serco Australia.
