A burst water main has shut down a major road in Melbourne’s CBD.
Victoria Street remains closed in both directions between Cardigan Street and Elizabeth Street after water inundated the area this morning.
It is likely closure will remain in place throughout the afternoon peak.
Motorists should plan to avoid the area if possible and allow extra time if Victoria Street is part of your normal journey.
In a statement, City West Water spokesperson Maree Lang “repair crews are on site due to a major water main burst at Victoria Street at the top end of Swanston Street.”
“There has been extensive damage to the road network as a result of the burst,” Ms Lang said.
“This may result in extended delays to traffic and the tram network.
We will continue to assess the impact of the burst on our customers to provide assistance, and will provide further updates.”
Robert Regan manages a residential building on Victoria Street and was notified by a number of residents about significant flooding out the front of the building.
He said water had started to make its way down to the building’s car park, and internet services had been interrupted.
“There’s an extreme amount of water pouring down and it’s been doing that for about two hours,” he told 9News.
Mr Regan said City West Water was yet to make contact with building management.
