A travel ban will be introduced for people coming into Australia from Italy, the Prime Minister announced.
It came after the death toll in Italy jumped by nearly 100 people last night, as the country grapples with the coronavirus outbreak.
The ban will come into effect from 6pm today.
“Italy itself has effectively put itself into lockdown with travel now, and this largely closes that loop,” Scott Morrison said at a press conference in Canberra.
“We already had the enhanced screening measures that are in place.
“This, of course, will mean that any Australians, residents or others, who are obviously exempt from those travel bans, would be subject to the same isolation period that applies to the other countries for which there are travel bans.”
